WHAT IS ATHLETIC THERAPY?
The profession of Athletic Therapy has evolved since 1965.
Athletic Therapy is a degree program offered at 6 universities in Canada. Upon completion of an accredited program, the candidate must successfully complete a national written and oral/practical examination to become certified and eligible to practice. All Athletic Therapists must maintain this certification by accumulating maintenance points and submitting them every three years.
Traditional Athletic Therapy is the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of orthopaedic injuries. Traditional Athletic Therapists work in universities, clinics, and with professional teams doing preventative taping and bracing, on field assessments and care of injuries and clinical assessment and rehab using various modalities (Ultra Sound, Laser, Muscle Stimulation etc.) along with active stretching, strengthening and reconditioning programs.
Many Athletic Therapists who work more clinically do continuing education in various areas, including cranio-sacral therapy, visceral manipulation, muscle energy techniques, and integrative manual therapy. All of these “osteopathic” techniques focus on assessing the body as a whole, integrated structure and correcting any imbalances or dysfunctions that exist to restore normal function.
